Healthy Habits

🫀February is american heart health Month🫀

This month, we spread awareness about Heart Health across America! Heart health is extremely important because in some way it affects every single one of us. Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death in the United States. These diseases can affect people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. And this is why we take the month of February to spread awareness about the importance of heart health!

Cardiovascular and heart disease is any condition that affects the muscle of the heart and the vascular system (veins and arteries). Some people, due to their genetics, are more likely than others to develop these conditions. But despite being predisposed to certain conditions, there are action steps that can be taken to decrease risk and improve quality of life!

Tips to help decrease risk of heart disease:  bigstock-Smiling-Active-Senior-People-J-463686141-1024x932

  1. Stop or do not start smoking and using tobacco products
  2. Maintain blood pressure within normal ranges
  3. Manage cholesterol levels
  4. Maintain healthy weight
  5. Regularly exercising
  6. Maintain blood sugar levels to prevent or manage Diabetes
  7. Limit stress and learn how to decrease stress
  8. Get proper amounts of sleep (7-9 hours for most adults)
  9. Limit alcohol consumption

As always it is important to speak with your healthcare providers about your own risk of heart disease. Make sure to have regular blood work completed and attend all regular check-ups.

But we want to empower y’all to start to act now to improve your quality of life! We challenge every one of you to walk for 30 minutes every day for the month of February! The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, so this goal exceeds that recommendation. But we know how awesome and dedicated our members are, so it will be a piece of cake! We can’t wait to see y’all out on the walking trails, feel free to share photos of your walk on social media and make sure to tag us!

Training with your heart in mind

Apple_Watch_heart_monitor_on_Peloton

With smart training watches, like Apple, Samsung, and Garmin watches just to name a few, becoming increasingly popular among a broader range of age groups, more people are becoming aware of how activity affects their heart rate. Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats in one minute. While this is worthwhile data to have, it is also important to properly understand what heart rates are appropriate and inappropriate before unnecessary fear is created.

An important first step is to determine what your maximum heart rate is based upon your age. The equation commonly used is to take 220 and subtract your age to determine age-related maximum heart rate. So, for example if you are 65 years old, your age-related max heart rate would be 155 beats per minute. This is simply a guide to use to get started. The reason knowing what your estimated max heart rate is important is because it helps us to better understand what your exercise tolerance is and what activity is appropriate and inappropriate. It can be a good indicator if exercise load can be increased or if it is necessary to decrease exercise loads.

It is important to speak with your healthcare professionals about your specific limitations as everyone is different. Listen to your body and always seek medical attention if you are ever unsure about symptoms related to your heart rate and exercise.
